IN today’s real estate market, it is possible to get a nice one-bedroom apartment for $400,000 in Manhattan. One with some Old World charm and a lot of light.

Or you could quintuple that figure and go for something a little more striking.
Melissa George, an Australian actress who was nominated for a Golden Globe for her role on the HBO show “In Treatment,” just bought a $1.825 million one-bedroom apartment with her husband, Claudio Dabed, in the Flatiron district.
Their new home is at 141 Fifth Avenue, at 21st Street, a late-19th-century Beaux-Arts building, with 34 apartments and a copper cupola. The building, a landmark, once housed the Landmarks Conservancy itself. It was originally a bank.
“I don’t know what else to say, other than 141 Fifth is one of the most beautiful and architecturally significant buildings along the historic Ladies’ Mile landmark district,” said Emily Beare, an executive vice president of the Core Group, who is selling all the apartments in the building.
Ms. George and Mr. Dabed’s new place has 10 1/2-foot ceilings and a 489-square-foot terrace. And if they need to borrow a cup of sugar — or perhaps some ketchup — they could pop over to the apartment of their neighbor, Bradley Blum, a former chief executive of Burger King, who bought a $3.7 million condo in the building earlier this year.
