A thriving gay community has added a super-hot scene of bars and LGBTQ clubs to this once-grubby neighborhood of Irish mobsters west of midtown. The “Broadway” Theater District and famous dance schools (Alvin Ailey; Mikhail Baryshnikov) make this area one of the cultural hubs of the world. The annual Ninth Avenue International Food Festival, the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum on a re-purposed 1943 aircraft carrier at Pier 86, Hell’s Kitchen Flea Market and a zillion multi-ethnic restaurants make this one of the most vibrant sections in NYC. The side streets still have the retro look of pre-‘80s New York.
