Everyone can admit that New York City construction scaffolding does not constitute “good” design. The NYC Department of Buildings along with several partners has taken this into account and have created an exciting competition – designers are to rethink and redesign the idea of scaffolding in the Urban Shed International Design Competition. Currently in stage 2 of the competition, three finalists have been chosen and each will set up shop on a job site in Lower Manhattan to showcase their design. The winner will receive city certification and their design will be used for future construction projects. The judges of the competition will be looking for a sustainable, economical design that has improved technical and structural performance and makes for a better environment for people who live, work and travel in New York City.
