Urban Design Must-See: Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms Park

Uncategorized, Architecture // Mar 28, 2013

Four Freedoms Park 2

To many New Yorkers, Roosevelt Island isn’t necessarily a weekend destination. However, that may change this spring after the Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms Park has racked up quite a few awards for its overall design and beauty.

Although the project was officially completed last year, its original design dates back to 1974 when American architect, Louis I. Kahn, first outlined the public space. Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms Park recently received the 2013 Urban Design Merit Award by the American Institute of Architects New York Chapter (AIANY), and was voted as the Best Public Space in Travel+Leisure’s 2013 Design Awards. Additionally, Louis I. Kahn will receive, posthumously, the Municipal Art Society’s 25th Brendan Gill Prize in recognition of the park’s concept and design.

With spring weather finally approaching, we suggest taking a trip to see this beautiful public space for yourself.
