As summer weekend getaways fade into sweet memories, it’s the perfect time to plan a stay-cation with all of the incredible things this city has to offer. Let’s ‘Fall in Love with New York’ all over again – as if that’s hard to do.
CORE’s John Harrison shares his outdoor must-do for the season.
Though fall is in full swing, these Indian-summer days allow for one of my all-time favorite activities: apple and pumpkin picking with my family and friends. Fresh fall air, apple everything (apple cider, apple cider donuts,) hay rides and plenty of harvest activities abound at many orchards and farms only about an hour from the city.
For the last couple of years we have been visiting the Harvest Moon Farm and Orchard, located in North Salem, NY. Depending on when you go, you can look forward to plenty of food and drink, bouncy houses and pony rides for the kids, games, live music and much more.
Another favorite place to visit — though not in New York — is Terhune Orchards, in Princeton, NJ. Their season is longer than Harvest Moon and they have many of the same activities. One thing we always like to do when visiting Terhune is to spend the day on the farm, then ease into downtown Princeton for a nice cool evening stroll before settling in for dinner at one of the many fun restaurants along Nassau Street.
Both orchards offer wine tastings, country markets serving farm-fresh foods, plenty of activities for the whole family and are easy to reach from the city. We always look forward to coming home and making fresh hot apple pie and having plenty of fruit to give away. Getting to spend a Saturday with some of my favorite people in the world and creating memories in nature’s beautiful setting always provides the perfect balance to the busy life of living in NYC!
