Choosing an apartment is one of the most important decisions you’ll make in your life. ‘Eyes On Design’ hopes to help you realize the full potential of your space after all the paperwork is signed, sealed and delivered—to ultimately turn your purchase into a home.

Though it seemed like summer would never end as the tirelessly hot and humid weather prevailed throughout September, it’s finally time to accept that all good things must come to an end. And while many of us have already packed away the summer inspired chotchkies in lieu of our festive fall favorites, it’s important to remember that it sometimes takes more than small details to shake up a space.

Metallics look chic all year long and when done right they steal the show. Though it’s easy to play along in the most basic form of hardware, this season mix and match golds, coppers and silvers on statement pieces throughout your space for the ultimate show stoppers. Consider adding credenzas, benches and bar stools throughout the kitchen, living room and bedrooms for a wow factor. Mixing metals is a great way to add multiple metallic accents without having to choose just one. It also provides an interesting take on neutrals for the space.

Take this trend a step further with the addition of wood, steel and glass to the mix. Think about a reclaimed wood bench with a steel base or a glass table with a wooden or bronze base. Maybe you want to ease into the trend with lamps and picture frames? A gallery wall is a perfect way to incorporate the trend without committing to large purchase pieces. Get creative and play around with different combinations until you find what works for you.

Just remember to be mindful of one of the most important components of design: balance. Contrast natural materials with geometric prints this season. While stripes always look classic, spruce up your style with chevron, diamond and everything in between. Options are endless as you consider size and color—so unlike fashion, this trend can really work for everyone. For larger pieces like chairs and area rugs, consider over-sized prints in more muted or neutral colors. Smaller pieces such as throw pillows, blankets and accessories should utilize funkier prints in richly saturated colors for a pop. Think eggplant, cranberry or cobalt. For a more subdued pop of pattern, try wallpapering a small accent wall or bookshelf with a geometric print in neutral and metallic colors. Think charcoal and gray with silver.

Mix it up this season with a variety of metallic and graphic prints. With so many ways to pull off these styles, it’s almost fool-proof. Whether you want to move full steam ahead or simply dip a toe in first, be fearless with your convictions and you are sure to fall in love with your space all over again.
