Sometimes that cute and cozy apartment will leave you with design challenges as you try to maximize your space. Use these tips provided by CORE Stylist Sharon Blaustein to fill your smaller space with ease.
- Keep it light – Opt for lighter, neutral furnishings and bedding to open up the space. Save bright or dark colors for accents: pillows or dining chairs.
- Paint your walls – Pure white walls actually give spaces a stark and cold effect, so use off-white or lighter neutral shades to brighten your home.
- Lift it up – Avoid chunky furniture and opt for pieces that have legs to make the space feel more airy (doubles as extra storage space too).
- Long drapery – Use floor to ceiling drapes even if the windows are smaller. This makes the ceiling appear higher and will instantly enlarge the space.
- Add a mirror – A full body mirror adds dimension to a small space. Instead of art that can be pricey, you can also use wall mirrors opposite a window to brighten your home.
- Multi-purpose furniture – In smaller apartments, especially in NYC, doubling a dining table as a work space is a definite space saver.
- Add a rug – In studio apartments, using one large rug to tie in all of the living zones will make your apartment appear much larger and give your home a sense of warmth.
- Use the walls – Wall shelving instantly adds extra room for storage.
- Leave some breathing room – Visual clutter kills your sense of space so avoid placing furniture closely together and leave some empty space wherever you have books or other items on display.
- See clearly – Using glass or lucite furniture gives the impression of openness while still delivering the function you need.
