David Quinn, the new head coach of the New York Rangers, is putting down roots in the Big Apple, starting with a $2.67 million loft in Chelsea.
Mr. Quinn, who’s making the move to New York City following a five-year stint as the men’s hockey coach at Boston University, closed Wednesday afternoon on a one-bedroom apartment at Chelsea Mercantile, a 100-year-old, limestone-clad garment factory converted into luxury condominiums.
He’ll be able to walk to work in less than 10 minutes, as his new Manhattan digs put him about eight blocks away from the Rangers’ home rink.
“I was looking for a place that was close to Madison Square Garden,” Mr. Quinn told Mansion Global, adding that he likes the casual feeling of a loft and wanted high ceilings.
When the team isn’t on the road, he’ll be spending about half of his time in Manhattan and the other half in Westchester County, near where the Rangers have their training facility in Tarrytown, New York. He could have made either place his home base, but Manhattan appealed to Mr. Quinn over a mansion in the suburbs, he said.
“I thought to myself, if I’m going to coach the New York Rangers than I should live in the city,” he said, plus “I’m more of a city person.”
Spanning more than 2,000 square feet, the contemporary home centers around an expansive living and entertaining space with recess lighting and 11-foot ceilings. An open kitchen off the main living space comes with top appliances, warm wooden cabinetry and a walk-in pantry, according to the listing description with CORE.
There’s a large dining room if Mr. Quinn feels like playing host, and a 20-foot master bedroom with a walk-in closet and limestone-clad en-suite bathroom. A den could be converted into a second bedroom or office, the listing says.
“It’s stunning,” said Samantha Brownell of Keller Williams Tribeca, who Mr. Quinn hired in his house hunt.
Mr. Quinn, 52, got a deal on his new home, which was first listed last year for $3.595 million—nearly $1 million more than he wound up paying.
“He got a great price, so he already has a lot of equity in the home,” Ms. Brownell said. She also helped him rent an apartment in Westchester, where he’ll stay when the team is training upstate, she said. Mr. Quinn, a Rhode Island native, reportedly signed a five-year, $12 million contract with the Rangers.
Residents at Chelsea Mercantile are spoiled with amenities, including a concierge, 10,000-square-foot roof deck, gym, in-house dry-cleaning services and a Whole Foods Market at the base of the building.
