Quoin: Starchitects

Quoin // Apr 03, 2017

DESPITE ROMEO’S PLEA, THERE’S REAL POWER IN A NAME. For good reason, too. The fame from a name is typically built by predictable excellence. In our world, if that excellence is built on architectural skills, we bestow upon them the name of Starchitect. But can these Starchitects actually move the needle? Let’s just say that if dear Juliet is looking to part with that Verona condo by morrow, she best hope it was built by a Starchitect.

STARCHITECT – (n.) a portmanteau used to describe architects whose acclaim have elevated them

above the highest notoriety in their field and to a level of celebrity in the wider public.

INSIGHT

“I like starchitects. I think the architecture community dismisses the term because it is borrowed from Hollywood, but like their Hollywood counterparts, it’s less about style – they can be fiercely independent or widely popular – and more about their ability to deliver. They deliver for their studios/developers. And they deliver value to their audience/end users.”

ICONIC DESIGN

Ten years after the debut of Frank Gehry’s iconic 8 Spruce Street, the star power shines on. Rents here command 20% more than comparable projects downtown.
