Concerned with other seemingly more important New York City issues, the mayor’s office has chosen not to address the development rules and regulations for buildings alongside Central Park. While the height of these buildings and their said shadows casted over Central Park have been a controversial discussion all summer, city planning officials have deemed this an issue of zoning and the de Blasio administration has no plans to adjust the zoning along the 57th Street corridor. Though that’s not to say that they will not be adjusted in the future.

Carl Weisbrod, director of the Department of City Planning notes that there are many benefits to the current zoning regulations – namely an interesting pedestrian experience. Weisbrod also mentions that the mixed-height streetscape allows for more light and air on city sidewalks with”an incredibly dynamic, iconic skyline that is the envy of the world.”
