East Village

Sooo downtown. From Third Avenue to the East River, this is a deeply textured neighborhood of walk-ups, fire escapes, lots of bars and restaurants, groovy vintage shops and super-edgy street style. Once home to the newest immigrants, this urban pocket retains an authentic vibe with holdovers like the Russian and Turkish Baths (1892). The city’s first-ever dog run is in Tompkins Square Park. Community gardens maintained by volunteers, dot the streets of Alphabet City. Solid indie music scene.

What's There

More income diversity than much of the rest of Manhattan island, but still not cheap.

The Vibe

Up for anything, all day, all night.

Not-So-Guilty-Pleasure

The independent record and bookshops.

What's Not There

Tranquility, accessible transit.
