CORE’s Jarrod Guy Randolph recently landed on the small screen, showing off his $4.995 million penthouse listing at the Upper East Side’s Isis condominium to CBS’s cameras. The piece was great — we’re sure the spacious full-floor spread and private outdoor spaces inspired plenty of viewer real estate envy — but it only told part of the story behind this luxurious listing at 303 East 77th Street

When Jarrod, a Forbes “30 Under 30″ recipient who joined CORE last spring, got the listing, the penthouse was completely empty, and he could tell that buyers were having a difficult time envisioning what the nontraditional space (with four bedrooms and four private terraces in all) would look and feel like as a fully furnished and functional home. “We really needed to furnish the place to show that there’s a lot you can do with it, whether for entertaining or just as a quiet place to call home,” Jarrod told us. “With furniture, I knew it would feel even more spacious, and people would respond to it.”

So Jarrod embarked on the most ambitious staging effort of his career — recruiting design specialists like Susan Goldstein of Studio D, rustic Brooklyn furniture craftsmen Organic Modernism, the contemporary art experts at Jayne Baum Gallery and others to create an immaculate space filled with both modern and traditional design elements, including over $250,000 in furniture and art. “Beautiful furniture and artwork always make the space look more luxurious, and it reenforces the luxury image of the building,” Jarrod said. “I’ve staged apartments before, but I really had to call in a lot of favors for this one.”

Welcome to Ten, CORE founder and CEO Shaun Osher’s rapid-fire interview series with prominent CORE figures. Read on to find out how this week’s subject deals with being on the hot seat.

CORE is a sprawling operation, and it takes solid leadership behind the scenes to make sure all of the moving parts are in their right places and performing the right tasks. Ashley Sternbach, CORE’s Director of Operations, is an expert at streamlining the many sides of our business and keeping things running efficiently, and her 5 years at our company have made her an integral part of our success.

core_ten_ashley_sternbach1) What did you do before joining CORE?
I practically joined CORE right after I graduated from Boston University’s School of Hospitality. I knew I wanted to work in real estate after graduating and luckily, it happened.

2) Why did you join CORE?
I liked the boutique feel and felt that working at a start-up would be an interesting challenge.

3) What has it been like to see the company grow and evolve?
When i joined CORE, there were only 10 agents, and the company was really trying to solidify its place in the luxury real estate market. It has been amazing to personally and professionally grow with the company. I like looking back and seeing how far we have come.

4) As a Director of Operations, you’re typically behind the scenes, so explain to people how your role works, and why it’s so vital to the business.
The work that I do as Director of Operations is very versatile. The unique thing about operations is that it is all about performing multiple roles at the same time, while other jobs tend to focus on a specific, narrower scope. I am often wearing multiple hats, whether it is setting up a new sales center for a new development project or interviewing potential new employees to bring on board, no two days have ever been the same — and that is one of the best parts of my job!

core_080212_elizabeth_keeOn the eve of her third anniversary at CORE, Elizabeth Kee has firmly established herself as a rising star in the industry, one who has shown great skill in managing and executing deals at all levels, including both residential and commercial property. And it’s no secret why she’s been so successful: real estate is in her blood. Read on for Elizabeth’s thoughts about the industry, and for more on Elizabeth’s background, click here.

1) How did you get into the business?
Since I was a small child, I have been obsessed with real estate. My parents were in the side-business of flipping houses. Instead of reading “the funnies” on Sunday morning, I preferred to read the Real Estate section.

2) Who is your mentor?
My mother has always been my mentor. She is a successful entrepreneur who I learned my professionalism, work ethic and business skills from. She is an amazing businesswoman and a fantastic mother – a very tough balance to maintain.

3) You’ve become very successful in a short time. What do you attribute this success to?
Real estate is my passion. When your career and your hobby are the same, it is nearly impossible not to be successful.

The strength of CORE has always been its agents, who routinely go above and beyond their job descriptions, and who continue to revolutionize the way real estate is marketed, bought and sold in New York City. A shining example of these characteristics is Vickey Barron, who joined CORE as Managing Director and has been a consistent top-performing broker during her 12+ years in the business. Find out what makes Vickey so different in the short film above–from her deeply personal philosophies on the business of real estate to her sharp eye for design and people-first principles. (You might also catch a few glimpses of some of Vickey’s current top properties.) For more on Vickey, check out her profile page, as well as CORE CEO Shaun Osher’s interview with her last year.

Now that shows like HGTV’s CORE-starring “Selling New York” and Bravo’s “Million Dollar Listing” have become part of popular culture, everyone in the industry wants to know more about reality television’s impact on the real estate business. Most agents say that the results have been positive, and Maggie Kent, CORE Vice President and a “Selling New York” regular, agrees. Maggie was recently asked by the Southern California chapter of the Luxury Marketing Council to take part in a panel discussion called “New York Style” for luxury real estate brokers in San Francisco.

Discussing her career, alongside Ryan Serhant (of “Million Dollar Listing”) and Curtis Nixon (also of “SNY”), Maggie spoke about the impact of the show, which she explained has been a boon for CORE and its agents, especially from a branding standpoint. Her advice to the crowd: Surround yourself with a great team and align yourself with a company that is compatible with the brand you envision for yourself. For photos from the reception held for the trio of New York agents, check out the coverage on LiveSOMA.

core_052412_tp2Thursday is typically “Selling New York” day on the CORE Blog, but you may have noticed that we’ve been quiet about the show in recent weeks. That’s because reruns have been airing on HGTV (including tonight’s re-airing of Parul Brahmbhatt’s “Steampunk apartment” launch) while new episodes are being filmed — new episodes that will be featuring CORE agents, of course. During this brief “SNY” pause, the topic of the real estate industry embracing reality television remains a hot topic. The current issue of The Real Deal magazine examines the connection, and wonders whether small screen exposure leads to big property sales. The jury is still out on that verdict, but shows like “Selling New York” do help drive interest and shape opinions. The Real Deal’s Katherine Clarke details one interesting example involving CORE’s Tom Postilio:

At the Urban Glass House condo in Soho, for example, sales had virtually stalled because of a much-publicized odor problem from a sanitation facility next door. An agent with two listings in the building, Core’s Tom Postilio, decided to spread the word about newly unveiled city plans for a new building to house the odorous garbage trucks.

“I spearheaded an effort, through ‘Selling New York,’ to show how fabulous the building is, factoring in the city’s plans,” said Postilio, who arranged an on-camera meeting with other brokers to strategize about how to reinvent the building’s image.

core_051712_rebaReba Miller joined CORE as Senior Managing Director of Sales last year after owning her own company for almost 30 years. She is an industry icon, and I am enjoying getting to know her as someone who works side by side with me. She has a sharp sense of humor, a unique sense of fashion, and a style all of her own.

1) How long have you been selling real estate?
27 years and then some!

2) How did you get involved in the business?
My father had retail stores and was a “jobber,” buying, negotiating, and reselling. So real estate was an easy fit for me.

3) How has the industry changed in that time?
The firm of Whitbread-Nolan was one of the premiere companies at the time, and the entire business was based on books of 3 x 6 index cards inscribed with each type of apartment that the firm had to offer. Your books were your listings and the pay phones were your form of communication!

Welcome to Ten, CORE founder and CEO Shaun Osher’s rapid-fire interview series with prominent CORE figures. Read on to find out how this week’s subject deals with being on the hot seat.

core_040312_beareDavid Beare has been with CORE for six years. He has built a solid reputation as a top young agent who is trustworthy, hard working, and always eager to learn and grow his business in the residential and commercial field. It was time we chatted for Ten.

1) How did you get into the business?
I got into the business in 2006, when I graduated from college. My mother Emily had gone into real estate a few years earlier. I was very intrigued with the business. It was the summer, she suggested that I try it out, so I got my license and the rest is history.

2) Who is your mentor?
My mentors are all members of my family. My grandfather Eric, who turned 83, is still at the helm of his business, and he taught me the 4 C’s that lead to success in business: communication, cooperation, coordination and collaboration. My father Brian also is a great mentor to me. He came to this country as a foreigner and started his own business from nothing. My mother Emily has an incredible work ethic – workaholic is more like it – and she is proof that success doesn’t just come to you, you have to want it and work for it.

3) You’ve become very successful in a short time. What do you attribute this success to?
Success for me really boils down to hard work, determination, developing/maintaining relationships, and following through (cliché I know, but it’s the truth). Having a good personality, being able to converse, and having a sense of humor are also very important – that is another thing I learned from my mentors.

core_031612_jarrodrandolphToday CORE is thrilled to announce that Jarrod Guy Randolph has joined the firm as a Vice President and Associate Broker. With a successful decade in the business, Jarrod’s personal contributions to new development projects have resulted in sales valued at over $400 million, including at notable projects such as 84 Bedford Street, Starck Downtown (15 Broad Street), River Lofts, Ariel East and Arial West, and The Lucida. Jarrod’s efforts were recently recognized by Forbes, which named him to the magazine’s prestigious “30 Under 30” list.

“Jarrod is the epitome of what we look for in a CORE agent and the new development and resale opportunities we offer are the perfect fit for his business model,” said Reba Miller, CORE’s Senior Managing Director of Sales. “His knowledge base, commitment and passion for his career and clients is apparent to everyone he comes in contact with. He is a thoroughbred of an agent and we can’t wait to watch him grow his personal brand at CORE.” Jarrod, an NYU graduate and patron of the arts — he is currently a board member on the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Generation Advance, and has previously been involved with the American Ballet Theatre — answered a few questions about his career, and why he decided to join CORE.

1) How did you first get into real estate?
I began in real estate working as an assistant for my best friend’s mother’s boss at age 16, and I fell in love. This was in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, where I grew up. She was the sales manager for Weichert Realty, and I did mostly administrative tasks and comparable reports. However, I received recognition for the “Land Bank” catalog I created. It was a book of all the large parcels of land in the county and who owned them. My boss took that information and successfully listed and sold many large tracks of land to major developers in the region. From that experience there was no looking back. Real estate became my career.

core_031512_sternWith 5 seasons (and counting!) of “Selling New York” under our belts, CORE agents are no strangers to the television spotlight. So, when HGTV, the network behind “SNY,” approached CORE’s Adrian Noriega about film one of his listings for a brand-new series, it was a no-brainer. And how’s this for a unique idea: Heard of man caves? Well, this new show is all about mom caves. HGTV’s “Mom Caves” stars designer Matt Muenster and Beth Stern (aka Mrs. Howard Stern) as they team up to create incredible spaces specifically for moms. As the show’s website says, “We’ll design and build the ultimate space for Mom, a place where she can kick back and relax with her friends or family and do what she likes to do best.”

Producers have been on the hunt for creative inspiration for “Mom Caves,” and the bright color-palette and sun-drenched rooms of Adrian’s listing at 15 West 20th Street fit the bill. Beth Stern was taken by the combination of reds, pinks, and oranges that the homeowner used in the apartment — a recent Wall Street Journal House of the Day — and felt that the décor would inspire her “moms.” To see this property, check it out here, and stay tuned for the upcoming episode on HGTV!
